about

Stars Turn Inside Out is the debut album by The Nature Strip. Peter Marley and John Encarnacao had played together in Warmer (johnencarnacao.bandcamp.com) and The Flies, but The Nature Strip began in late 2009 when Pete asked John's help to finish a couple of tunes. One of them - The Worst One - is on this album.

So began a poptastic journey, equal parts the new wave of Blondie and XTC and the power pop of The Posies and Fountains of Wayne. Some notes on the songs:

Beautiful Rain
Who knew that the portal to another dimension was a toy piano?

Three-Foot High Sissy Bar
Stomps like a pair of Marc Bolan’s platforms, although it might be PJ Harvey wearing them. The drum sound is courtesy of the reverb of a two-story stairwell . . . and a pair of maracas standing in for drum sticks.

Fly Through
Highlights the Marley-Encarnacao vocal blend. The Everly Brothers they may not be, but they got their own thing.

It’s Inside You
Featuring John on Portuguese guitar (like mandolin but deeper).

What a Life
This is all Pete's work, with drums by Jess Ciampa.

Worst One
The power pop monster that started it all.

Hero
Pete smashes through meteors, battles with tigers and giants, dives deep for the prize. With a half-broken piano and an r’n’b drum loop that rumbles like a dinosaur.

Sugar Crash
Quotes Robert Johnson and sounds a bit like Kiss gone punk.

Beyond The Nether
Outer space tends to appear in Pete's songs, but this one by John is more about inner space. Return of the toxic Casio for extra early Eighties crunch.

If You Try
A kindred soul to ‘What A Life’, this sees Pete writing in an open tuning and delivering an impassioned vocal.
